About this tool

Animated WebP is the modern alternative to GIF: same uses, true colors and much smaller files. Pick the section and quality, and the animation is created on your device.

When to use it

Animate a site without slowing it down

A WebP animation of a few hundred kilobytes replaces a multi-megabyte GIF, for a page that loads faster.

Share a high-quality animation

The colors of filmed footage stay true, without the flat patches and dots of GIF.

Make animated stickers

Messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram use WebP for their animated stickers.

How to use

  1. Choose your video.
  2. Select the section, width, smoothness and quality.
  3. Click “Create animated WebP” and download it.

How it works

The tool reads frames from the chosen section at regular intervals, scales them, then asks the browser to compress each one as WebP at the chosen quality.

The frames are then assembled into a single animated WebP file, with each frame's duration and looping, following the format's official specification.

Tips for best results

  • 75 to 85% quality gives an excellent result at a small size.
  • Keep 10 to 15 frames per second for smooth motion.
  • A 480 px width is enough for a website or a messaging app.
  • If the recipient uses old software, prefer “Video to GIF”.
  • For a short, crisp animation, cut the duration rather than the quality.

Common problems and fixes

The tool says the browser isn't compatible

Safari can't create WebP: use Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

The animation doesn't show for the recipient

Their software doesn't read animated WebP: send a GIF instead.

The file is too large

Lower the quality, width or frame rate.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from a GIF?

Animated WebP keeps millions of colors instead of 256 and compresses much better: at equal quality it's often 3 to 5 times smaller.

Where does animated WebP play?

In every recent browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) and most messaging apps. Some old software won't show it.

Why doesn't it work in Safari?

Safari can display WebP but can't create it. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox to create one.

Is the sound kept?

No, like GIF, animated WebP has no sound.
