About this tool

Convert text to Base64 and back without losing accents or emojis, thanks to UTF-8. The URL-safe variant (Base64URL) used by JWTs and URLs is supported both ways.

How to use

  1. Choose encode or decode.
  2. Paste your text or Base64.
  3. Copy the result, or swap to check it.

Common problems and fixes

Accented characters come out garbled

The text was encoded as Latin-1 elsewhere. This tool uses UTF-8, the web standard: re-encode the source as UTF-8.

“Invalid Base64”

Check that no characters are missing: the length must be a multiple of 4 (a missing trailing “=” is added for you).

The decoded result is empty or strange

The Base64 most likely contains a file (image, PDF), not text.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. It is a simple encoding that anyone can reverse. Never use it to hide a password.

What is Base64URL?

A variant that replaces + and / with - and _ and drops the = padding so it fits in a URL. JWTs use it.

Why is the result longer?

Base64 represents 3 bytes with 4 characters: size grows by about 33%.

Is my data uploaded?

No, encoding and decoding happen in your browser.
