About this tool
Keep only the sound of a video: a talk to listen to again, the music of a personal clip or a filmed voice note. Choose MP3, M4A or WAV, with no upload.
When to use it
Listen to a talk or lecture again
An hour-long video recording becomes a small audio file to play on the go, like a podcast.
Keep a song or a speech
The song from a filmed show, a wedding speech or the music of a personal edit can be kept as MP3.
Prepare a transcription
Dictation and transcription tools handle an audio file better than a heavy video.
How to use
- Choose your video.
- Pick the audio format and quality.
- Click “Extract audio” and download the file.
How it works
A video holds a picture track and a sound track, often AAC or Opus. The tool reads only the sound track, without decoding the frames, which is fast even for a long video.
The sound is then re-encoded to the chosen format: MP3 with a built-in LAME encoder, AAC in an M4A file, or uncompressed WAV. The chosen bitrate sets the quality and file size.
Tips for best results
- For a podcast or talk, 128 kbps is enough and keeps the file small.
- For music, choose at least 192 kbps.
- WAV is only useful for demanding audio editing software.
- To keep only one section, trim the video first with “Video trimmer”.
- If you just want an MP3, “MP4 to MP3” gets straight to it.
Common problems and fixes
The button stays greyed out
The video has no audio track: there's no sound to extract.
The WAV file is huge
That's expected: WAV isn't compressed. Choose MP3 or M4A.
The video won't open
Supported formats are MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV.
Frequently asked questions
Which audio format should I pick?
MP3 plays everywhere. M4A (AAC) is smaller at equal quality, ideal for iPhone. WAV keeps lossless sound but is ten times larger.
Which quality should I pick?
128 kbps is enough for voice; 192 kbps for music; 320 kbps for the best possible quality.
Is the video changed?
No, the original video stays untouched: a new audio file is created.
Can I extract sound from a YouTube video?
The tool works on files stored on your device. Respect the copyright of the content.
