About this tool

Drop a PDF to get a Word file (.docx) whose text you can edit. Paragraphs are rebuilt, headings are recognised by their size and each PDF page starts a new page. Conversion happens in your browser: the document is never uploaded.

When to use it

Editing a document received as PDF

A letter template, a contract or a CV received as PDF: recover its text in Word to correct, complete or reuse it without retyping everything.

Reusing text

Quoting a report, adapting a procedure or translating a document is easier when the text is in a word processor, with whole paragraphs instead of broken lines.

Preparing an accessible document

A .docx with real headings reads better with a screen reader and converts easily to other formats (HTML, EPUB).

How to use

  1. Drop your PDF.
  2. Wait while the pages are read.
  3. Download the .docx file and open it in Word.

How it works

A PDF contains no paragraphs: it places pieces of text at precise positions on the page. The tool reads these pieces with pdf.js, Firefox's PDF library, groups them into lines by position, then lines into paragraphs by spacing and character size. Words hyphenated at the end of a line are joined back together.

Lines clearly larger than the body text become level 1 or 2 headings, usable in Word's navigation pane and table of contents. The .docx file is then assembled directly in your browser; it opens in Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs and Pages.

Tips for best results

  • Results are better with a PDF created by software (Word, website export) than with a scanned document.
  • After conversion, check the headings and apply your styles: the structure is rebuilt, not the original formatting.
  • For a scanned PDF, run optical character recognition (OCR) first, for example in Google Drive or your phone's Files app.
  • For a multi-column document, check the paragraph order: text is read top to bottom across the full page width.
  • If you only need an excerpt, select the text in your PDF reader and paste it: it's quicker.

Common problems and fixes

“This PDF contains no text”

It is a scanned document or a series of images: there is no text to recover without optical character recognition (OCR).

Words are stuck together or oddly spaced

Some PDFs place each letter separately or use fonts with no Unicode mapping. The recovered text may then need proofreading.

Tables and images are gone

The tool recovers text and paragraph structure. Tables become line-by-line text and images are not carried over.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF sent to a server?

No. Reading the PDF and creating the Word file both happen entirely in your browser.

Is the layout preserved?

Text, paragraphs, headings and page breaks are preserved; fonts, colours, columns, tables and images are not.

Does the file open in LibreOffice or Google Docs?

Yes, it is a standard .docx file, readable by Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs, Pages and OnlyOffice.

Can I convert a scanned PDF?

Not directly: a scan is an image. Optical character recognition (OCR) is needed first.
