About this tool
Shrink a video that's too large for WhatsApp, email or an online form. Choose the compression level and resolution: the video is re-compressed to MP4 on your device and never uploaded.
When to use it
Email a video
Gmail and Outlook cap attachments at 20 or 25 MB. A few minutes of 4K footage go way past that; compressed to 720p, it fits easily.
Share on WhatsApp on your terms
Messaging apps re-compress videos themselves, often poorly. Compressing it yourself keeps you in control of the final quality.
Free up storage
Phone videos quickly fill tens of gigabytes. Compressed, memory videos often take three to five times less space.
How to use
- Choose your video.
- Set the compression level and resolution.
- Click “Compress video” and download the MP4.
How it works
Phones record video at a high bitrate, often 15 to 50 megabits per second, to keep every detail. Compression re-encodes the frames at a lower bitrate and, if you choose, a lower resolution: that's where most of the savings come from.
Encoding uses WebCodecs, the browser's built-in video engine, often accelerated by the graphics chip. The result is an MP4 in H.264 or the best available codec, with sound kept as AAC, or removed if you untick it.
Tips for best results
- For WhatsApp or email, “Balanced” at 720p is the best trade-off.
- Remove the sound from a silent demo video to save a few megabytes.
- Keep the original until you've checked the result in the player.
- For a very long video, trim the useful part first with “Video trimmer”.
- If the file is still too large, switch to 480p or the “Maximum” level.
Common problems and fixes
The video is too large for WhatsApp or email
Compress it here at 720p, “Balanced”: the size often drops by more than half.
The compressed file isn't smaller
The video was already highly compressed: lower the resolution or choose “Maximum”.
Compression is slow
Video encoding is demanding: close other tabs, plug in the charger or use a computer.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller does the video get?
Often 50 to 90% smaller for a phone video, depending on the level and resolution. An already highly compressed video gains less.
Does quality drop?
At “Balanced” in 720p, the difference is hard to see on a phone. The “Light” level keeps the best quality.
How long does it take?
Roughly the length of the video, often less on a recent computer thanks to hardware acceleration.
What's the output format?
An MP4, the format played by every phone, computer, messaging app and social network.
