About this tool

Common problems and fixes
My word processor gives a different number
Programs do not all count “don't” or “well-known” the same way. The difference is a few words at most.
The limit is in characters including spaces
Use the “Characters” counter; “Without spaces” is for limits that exclude them.
The frequent words are tiny words
Stop words (the, of, and…) are already ignored; what remains are the words that matter.

No, counting happens in your browser and nothing is stored.
How is reading time calculated?
Based on 230 words per minute for silent reading and 150 for reading aloud.
Is “don't” one word or two?
One: words joined by an apostrophe or hyphen count once, as in Word.
Is there a length limit?
No, the tool stays fast even for a whole book.
