About this tool

Create an animated GIF from a phone video, a screen recording or any clip. Choose the exact section, size and smoothness: the conversion runs on your device, with no watermark.

When to use it

React in a conversation

A funny moment from a video becomes a GIF to share on Slack, Teams, Discord or a forum, where videos don't autoplay.

Show how to do something

A few seconds of screen recording as a GIF explain a step in an app better than a long paragraph, in docs or a support ticket.

Animate a page or an email

GIFs display in most email clients and on every web page, with no video player.

How to use

  1. Choose your video.
  2. Select the section, width and frames per second.
  3. Click “Create GIF” and download it.

How it works

The tool reads frames from the video at regular intervals using the browser's video decoder, then scales them to the chosen size. A 5-second GIF at 10 frames per second therefore holds 50 frames.

Since GIF only knows 256 colors, the tool computes a palette shared by all frames with median cut, then compresses each frame with the format's LZW algorithm. Optional Floyd–Steinberg dithering avoids banding in gradients.

Tips for best results

  • Aim for 2 to 6 seconds: the ideal length for a shareable GIF.
  • A 480 px width is enough for most uses; 320 px for a very light file.
  • 10 frames per second give smooth motion at a reasonable size.
  • Turn dithering off for a screen recording with flat colors: the file will be smaller.
  • If the GIF is too large for the platform, try “Video to animated WebP”, often 3 to 5 times smaller.

Common problems and fixes

The GIF is several megabytes

Reduce the width, frame rate or duration: the size drops sharply.

Colors look blotchy

Turn on dithering: it smooths gradients despite the 256-color limit.

The video won't open

Supported formats are MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. Try Chrome or Edge for rarer codecs.

Frequently asked questions

What's the maximum GIF length?

Up to 30 seconds, but a good GIF usually lasts 2 to 6 seconds: beyond that the file quickly gets very large.

Why is my GIF so big?

GIF is an old, inefficient format. Reduce the width (320 or 480 px), the frame rate (8 to 12) or the duration, or use animated WebP instead.

Is the sound kept?

No, the GIF format has no sound.

What does dithering do?

GIF only has 256 colors. Dithering mixes dots of color to smooth gradients, at the cost of a slightly larger file.
