About this tool

The touch screen test has you paint a grid with your finger to find areas that no longer respond, then counts fingers detected at once (multi-touch). Useful before buying a used phone or after a drop.

How to use

  1. Slide your finger across the whole grid.
  2. Touched cells change colour.
  3. Put several fingers down to test multi-touch.

Common problems and fixes

A strip of the screen does not respond

Remove the screen protector and case, clean the glass and restart. If the area stays dead, the touch panel is damaged.

The screen taps by itself (ghost touches)

Often a faulty charger or a cracked glass. Test without the charger; if it persists, have the screen checked.

Multi-touch detects only one finger

Some computer screens support a single point. On phones, an update or restart often fixes it.

Frequently asked questions

An area never changes colour.

Remove the screen protector and clean the glass. If the area stays dead, the touch panel is probably damaged.

How many fingers should be detected?

Recent phones and tablets detect at least 5, often 10.

Does it work on iPhone and iPad?

Yes, in Safari or Chrome. Slide your finger slowly to cover each cell.

Can I test a touch laptop screen?

Yes, with a finger or a stylus on Windows and Chromebook touch screens.
