About this tool

Choose the format, enter the content and download a sharp barcode, as PNG for screens or SVG for print. For EAN, UPC and ITF codes, the check digit is calculated or verified automatically.

When to use it

Product labels

Print the EAN-13 or UPC-A assigned to your product on its packaging or label.

Stock, inventory and parcels

CODE 128 encodes internal references, batch numbers or parcel numbers that any scanner can read.

Cartons and pallets

ITF-14 identifies shipping cartons that group several products.

How to use

  1. Choose the format.
  2. Enter the content.
  3. Download the code as PNG or SVG.

How it works

Codes are drawn in your browser following the GS1 and ISO specifications: pattern tables, guard bars and a modulo 10 check digit for EAN, UPC and ITF, a modulo 103 check symbol for CODE 128.

CODE 128 automatically switches to compact mode (two digits per symbol) for runs of digits, which makes the code shorter. The SVG is vector-based: it stays sharp at any size.

Tips for best results

  • A retail product's EAN or UPC must be assigned by GS1: making one up can cause conflicts.
  • Print black on white; avoid red, which many laser scanners cannot see.
  • Leave a white margin of at least ten narrow bars on each side.
  • Test the printed code with a scanner or a phone camera before a large print run.

Common problems and fixes

The check digit is rejected

The last digit does not match the others: check the code, or remove that digit to have it calculated.

The scanner can't read the printed code

Increase the bar width and contrast, and keep white margins.

Accented letters are refused

CODE 128 only accepts ASCII: replace é with e, or use a QR code for free text.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

UPC-A (12 digits) is used in North America; it is an EAN-13 starting with 0.

Can I use these codes commercially?

Yes, the images are free to use. Only retail EAN/UPC numbers have to be obtained from GS1.

How is the check digit calculated?

Digits are weighted 3 and 1 alternately from the right; the check digit brings the sum up to the next multiple of ten.

Is the code sent to a server?

No, it is drawn in your browser.
