About this tool
Get the colors of a photo, a logo or a screenshot: the tool extracts 2 to 12 dominant colors with their share of the image, and an eyedropper gives the exact color of any point in HEX, RGB and HSL. The palette exports to CSS, SCSS, Tailwind or JSON.
When to use it
Reuse a logo's colors
For a website or a presentation, pick a client logo's exact colors instead of guessing them.
Get inspired by a photo
The dominant colors of a landscape or a product photo form a naturally harmonious palette.
Identify an on-screen color
Take a screenshot, paste it and pick the color of a button or text in one click.
How to use
- Choose an image (or paste a screenshot).
- Read the dominant colors and their share of the image.
- Click the image to pick a precise color, then copy its code.
How it works
The image is reduced to at most 900 pixels per side, then up to 12,000 pixels are sampled. The k-means algorithm starts from colors spread by brightness and refines the groups over 15 passes; transparent pixels are ignored.
The eyedropper reads the exact value of the clicked pixel in the displayed image. Colors are converted to HEX, RGB and HSL by the same functions as the site's color converter.
Tips for best results
- For a logo, choose few colors: otherwise edge anti-aliasing creates in-between shades.
- Pick with the eyedropper in the middle of a solid area, not on an edge.
- A JPEG photo has slightly noisy colors: average several points.
- Then check the contrast of the chosen colors with the contrast checker.
Common problems and fixes
The picked color differs slightly from the original
JPEG compression and anti-aliasing slightly alter pixels. Use the original PNG image if possible.
An important color is missing
It covers little of the image. Increase the number of colors, or pick it with the eyedropper.
The white background dominates
It's the most present color: crop the image to the subject before analyzing it.
Frequently asked questions
How are the dominant colors found?
By clustering (k-means): pixels with similar colors are grouped, and each group gives an average color and its share of the image.
How many colors should I pick?
5 or 6 for a photo, 2 to 4 for a logo. More colors reveal close shades.
Can I get the exact color of a logo?
Yes, with the eyedropper: click a solid area of the logo to get its HEX, RGB and HSL code.
Is my image uploaded?
No, the analysis runs in your browser; the image never leaves your device.
