About this tool
Read the date behind a timestamp from a log, database or API: ISO 8601, UTC, local time and relative time. Seconds and milliseconds are detected automatically, and the reverse (date to timestamp) works too.
How to use
- Paste the timestamp.
- Check the detected unit.
- Copy the date format you need, or convert a date to a timestamp.
Common problems and fixes
The date is in 1970
The value is probably in seconds while milliseconds were expected: choose “Seconds”.
The date is in the year 50,000
The opposite: the value is in milliseconds. Choose “Milliseconds”.
There is a one or two hour gap
The timestamp is always UTC; local time depends on your device's time zone and daylight saving.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00 UTC.
Seconds or milliseconds?
Unix systems and PHP use seconds (10 digits); JavaScript and Java use milliseconds (13 digits).
What is the year 2038 problem?
A timestamp stored as a signed 32-bit integer overflows on 19 January 2038. 64-bit systems are not affected.
Does a timestamp depend on the time zone?
No, it is universal; only its display in local time changes.
