About this tool
Get the hash of text or a file to verify a download, compare two versions or prepare a test. Hashing uses Web Crypto, built into your browser: even a large file is never uploaded.
How to use
- Type text or choose a file.
- The four hashes appear immediately.
- Paste the expected hash to check it matches.
Common problems and fixes
My hash does not match the website's
Check the algorithm (SHA-256 and SHA-1 differ) and that the downloaded file is complete.
The text hash differs from my code's
A trailing newline or an encoding other than UTF-8 changes the whole hash.
I am looking for MD5
MD5 is no longer secure and browsers do not provide it. Use SHA-256, the current standard.
Frequently asked questions
Can a hash be reversed?
No, it is a one-way function. But a short password can be brute-forced: do not hash passwords with plain SHA.
Which algorithm should I choose?
SHA-256 for most uses. SHA-1 is no longer considered collision-resistant.
Is my file uploaded?
No, it is read and hashed by your browser.
Why is the website's checksum in uppercase?
Hexadecimal is case-insensitive: the comparison ignores case.
