About this tool

Common problems and fixes
My database rejects the UUID
Some columns expect 32 characters without hyphens (BINARY(16), CHAR(32)): tick “No hyphens”.
I need UUIDs sortable by date
v4 UUIDs are random. For chronological order, use v7 UUIDs generated by your language or database.
The button generates nothing
crypto.randomUUID requires a secure connection (https) and a recent browser: update it.

Are UUID and GUID the same?
Yes: GUID is Microsoft's name for the same 128-bit format.
Can there be a duplicate?
Practically no: you would need billions of UUIDs per second for decades to have a chance of collision.
What does the 4 in a UUID mean?
The first digit of the third group is the version: 4 for a random UUID.
Are the UUIDs stored?
No, they are created by your browser and are neither sent nor kept.
